Geography

Studying geography is so important for children, regardless of their age or stage of learning. Geography helps them to make sense of the world around them and piques their curiosity in places and people. Done well, it engages pupils in their world, often spurring them into action, and is fun! (Ian Freeland, HMI, Ofsted’s subject lead for Geography)

At Dove Bank Primary School, we know that Geography is an essential part of the curriculum where pupils can become engaged and develop key skills. Geography is an exciting, relevant subject which can be seen in action in our daily lives. There are many cross-curricular links to ensure that pupils are able to see the subject in context to themselves, the lives of the community around them and the wider world, developing their ideas of global citizenship.

Geography teaches an understanding of places and environments. Through their work in Geography, children learn about their area and compare their life in this locality to other regions in the United Kingdom and in the rest of the world. They learn how to draw and interpret maps and develop the skills of research, investigation, analysis and problem-solving. Through their growing knowledge and understanding of human geography, children gain an appreciation of life in other cultures. Geography teaching also motivates children to find out about the physical world and enables them to recognise the importance of sustainable development for the future of humanity.
