Science

‘A high-quality science education provides the foundations for understanding the world through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics. Science has changed our lives and is vital to the world’s future prosperity, and all pupils should be taught essential aspects of the knowledge, methods, processes and uses of science. Through building up a body of key foundational knowledge and concepts, pupils should be encouraged to recognise the power of rational explanation and develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about natural phenomena. ‘ National Curriculum 2014

At Dove Bank, we want to develop children as scientists, through a clearly planned programme that develops both skills and knowledge in a creative, practical and relevant way, wherever possible!

· Trips and special activity days are planned to enrich the Science curriculum and form an important part of each unit that is covered.

· Outside learning takes place whenever possible and children are encouraged to explore their environment.

· Sustainability ambassadors are a group of children who take a leading role in looking after our environment.

· Two hours per week is dedicated to the teaching of science, whether that is in one lesson or spread over a number of days. In the Early Years, it will also be an essential part of continuous provision. It may also be taught throughout the year if appropriate, for example, the seasons.

· To fully engage our children and make Science relevant and meaningful, children will experience real-life activities, so, for example, a study of plants inevitably involves time outside and growing.

· Children are exposed to a rich vocabulary that is aspirational and has no boundaries. High quality discussions form an essential part of learning in Science. Essential vocabulary forms part of classroom displays in all year groups, as well as being in books.

Extra-Curricular Activities

· Newly appointed ‘Climate and Sustainability Ambassadors’ are quickly developing an important and active role within school. They have begun work on promoting ‘walk to school week’, recycling and will be taking part in a national survey on wildlife within the school grounds.

· Science week is celebrated each year, with whole-school activities happening throughout the week and also includes a session where parents are invited in to take part in a Science lesson alongside their children.
